권력의 이양 Transfer of Power

건축은 기본적으로 인간을 자연의 위협으로부터 보호하기 위해 만들어진다. 그러나 근대 초기까지 집단 기억을 담은 건축물들은 대부분 왕족이나 정권 및 종교 지도자와 같은 지배 권력을 대변하고 유지하는 장치로 사용되었다. 한국 근대사에서 건축은 새로운 시대정신의 발로로 시작되었으나, 근대건축물을 발주했던 이들은 왕족이었다. 이후에는 신문물을 수용한 신흥 상업집단 그리고 집권정권으로 권력이 계승되었다.
지배 권력의 지원기구로서 탄생한 근대건축물 중에서 긴 시간의 켜를 간직한 채 이제는 대중에게 열린 장소가 있다. 이들은 단순히 해당 건축물의 보전으로 그치지 않고 주변으로 물리적 영역을 확장했다. 공간의 사용주체가 특정 권력집단에서 대중에게 이양되어 건축이 확장되었다. 이 건축물들은 원래 권력집단의 유지나 지원을 위해 세워졌기 때문에 옛 도심의 가장 좋은 곳이나 신문물을 받아들인 여토의 최전선인 항구 요지에 위치한다. 이러한 태생적 이권이 대중에게 열린 공간으로 이양되면서 일반 시민이 도시 중심부를 점유하는 행위로 연결된다. 도심의 은폐된 권력공간이 대중에게 돌아가기까지 매우 긴 시간이 소요되었다. 그 장소에 올바른 이름표를 달아주기 위하여 시민, 사회 활동가, 건축가 들이 부단히 노력한 결실이 바로 이곳에 있다. 글 전성은

Ultimately Buildings purpose to be shelter human beings from nature. However, buildings with a collective memory were, until the early modern period, mostly used as tools to sustain the ruling power, whether it is the royal family, governing political power or the power of religions leaders.
In modern Korean history, however, architecture began to express the new spirit of the times. True, those who ordered the modern buildings remained royalty. Likewise, the power of the building’s role, history and place was later inherited by the new commercialist group that accepted the new culture and the ruling class as well as all the de facto political power that went with them.
Some buildings created as supporting tools for the ruling power are now open to the public with a long history of their own to tell. Yet, they have expanded their physical territory to their surroundings. Since these buildings were established to sustain or support power groups, they are located in the best areas of central axis in previous urban centers or important ports that are the front line of the territory that accepted the new culture. These inherent benefits lead to the act of regaining the central urban as the concealed spaces of power in the city become transformed into open spaces for the public. Much time has passed until the return to the public of these modern buildings, which once represented the spaces of power in the city.
